He has a Bachelor’s Degree in Philosophy and is a professional journalist, he has been working at Il Mattino since 1986 where he has edited a specialist column on wine for years following the great relaunch of viticulture and gastronomy in the Campania region and in southern Italy since 1994. He won the Veronelli award as the best Italian journalist in 2008.

At the center of his interests is quality catering, the defense of typical products and environmentally-friendly agriculture. He has written numerous articles for sector magazines including Slow Food, Civiltà del Bere, Cucine e Vini.

He has published numerous books: La cucina napoletana e La Pizza (The Neapolitan cuisine and La Pizza), a contemporary story, published by Hoepli and a chapter in the book La Pizza published by “Slow Food”; with Newton Compton he published La cucina napoletana di mare (The Neapolitan Sea Cuisine), I dolci napoletani, (Neapolitan sweets), 101 vini da bere almeno una volta nella vita (101 wines to drink at least once in a lifetime), published by Rizzoli-Bur, Guida ai vini low cost (Guide to low-cost wines) and recently Il Metodo Cilento (The Cilento Method), published by Mondadori.

He is the author for the Edizioni dell’Ippogrifo of guides on the wines of Campania and Basilicata as well as the successful Le Ricette del Cilento (Recipes of the Cilento area) and Le Ricette di Napoli (Recipes of Naples).

Since 1998 he has been collaborating with the Espresso restaurant Guide, he has been involved in the Slowine Slow Food guide since its first edition.

Since 2004 he has edited his blog www.lucianopignataro.it, one of the most clicked and authoritative in the food and wine sector.

Since 2018 he has edited the online guides 50 Top Pizza and 50 Top Italy.
